MONDAY, November 4

Revelation 10:10 So I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it; it was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter.

I’ll never forget an outdoor advertisement I saw some decades ago: “I tasted escargot twice. Once going down.” For many, the taste of cooked snails is a bitter one. Saint John the Revelator has just witnessed an utterly astonishing scene: a truly massive angel descending from heaven, wrapped in a cloud and underneath a rainbow, announcing the imminent fulfillment of the mystery of God. John is then commanded to take a scroll from the angel’s hand and consume it.

Many of us have likely experienced feeling sick to our stomachs over the prospect of sharing news that we know will not be received with smiles and applause. This is John’s position, too. It is his unenviable job to speak a prophetic word to the Church. Obedience is not one of the fun and attractive parts of following Jesus. Fortunately the Holy Spirit supplies that necessary grace.

MOVING FORWARD: When was the last time you had to share hard news? How did you do?
