Psalm 71:22-23 Therefore I will praise you upon the lyre for your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing to you with the harp, O Holy One of Israel. My lips will sing with joy when I play to you, and so will my soul, which you have redeemed.
In my career as a musician, I have learned a difficult lesson: do not judge others. When I judge others, I isolate myself from new friends, new communities, new ideas, and new ways to praise God. When I spend time judging others, I take time away from improving my musical ability.
The same is true in other ways that we practice our faith. Rather than judging others for not doing things in the way that we see fit—playing the wrong instrument, singing the wrong song, saying the wrong prayer—we need to focus on offering our unending praise before God. When we focus all our energy on God, we find the joy that God has promised us, and that’s worth singing to the heavens.
MOVING FORWARD: Search for different versions of your favorite hymn or praise song (organ, guitar, a capella, etc.). How does it feel to experience the song in new ways?
