THURSDAY, April 4

Romans 8:23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

One of my pet peeves is waiting—in long lines at the airport, in freeway traffic, for elevators that take an eternity to reach my floor. Just as my spirit groans with the discomforts of life, Creation also cries out when its natural order is interrupted. The earth groans and longs for renewal and restoration—groans with the expectation of Jesus’ return and all things being made new.

As we move toward Eastertide, may we develop a deeper awareness of how our choices affect the world around us. May we work to become better stewards of creation and tend to this place the way we would attend to an expectant mother—with intention and compassion. We live in the hope of a tomorrow when the lamb will lie down with the lion, when we will study war no more, when we—and all of creation—are restored to our original purpose.

MOVING FORWARD: What is one of your pet peeves? What can it teach you about your faith?
