WEDNESDAY, July 4     Independence Day (USA)

Matthew 5:46a For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?

I can’t count the number of times I’ve been told that a decision I made as a teacher wasn’t “fair.” Maybe I let a student turn in work a little late or asked the entire class to give an assignment another shot. Often the complaints about my unfairness come from students who are already doing well in the class. Typically, my response to these complaints is to remind the students that “fairness” isn’t always a good thing.

If life were absolutely “fair,” none of us would get second chances. Instead, we would get exactly what we earned and no more. Moral missteps would result in a lifetime of guilt and recrimination. Accidents would be a source of perpetual shame. Failure would mean permanent defeat.

What Jesus is asking us to do here is hard—our enemies ought to pay their due. Fortunately, God is more concerned with mercy than with giving us what we deserve. Just like sunshine and rain, regardless of our worthiness to receive them, God’s love is intended for everyone. Our task is to give it away.

MOVING FORWARD: When have you wrestled with an unfair decision? Are you able to give thanks for “unfairness”?
