Deuteronomy 10:19 You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

The holy mandate of loving the stranger is dear to my heart. I see clearly how it applies to immigrants and refugees, as well as the underserved and hungry in our communities. But I think it’s much harder to live this in the more ordinary moments of our lives.

In my city of Seattle, some (not all) of the longtimers believe the city doors should be closed. They don’t want too many new people to come in and perhaps change the city. But Seattle has lots of jobs, and it’s a beautiful place to live. The secret is out. So how do we put aside our fear and radically welcome the stranger?

See the stranger, put on a friendly face, and offer your hand. This can be hard, but it’s what God wants us to do. Each time we do so we move closer to becoming the whole, big, broad, beloved community God dreams we can be.

MOVING FORWARD: See the stranger. Put on a friendly face. Offer your hand.
