WEDNESDAY, September 4

James 3:8-9 But no one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God.

“I hate you!” I could hardly believe the words spilling from my child’s mouth. How could someone so loved and cared for offer such unkindness? But I once said the same to my parents, and most parents I know have been on both ends of this dreaded interaction. We can say it’s merely an intemperate outburst in an emotional moment. But the words still hurt; they break our hearts, and we sit in the sting of fear and self-doubt.

This same child cried upon discovering neighbors struggling with hunger. The child who gave savings to the food bank is the same who wields words of hate like a dagger. And don’t we all?

I care and I give and I serve, but I also judge and ignore. “Lord, be on our lips!” should be our constant prayer. Language is a hallmark of humanity and one of God’s most precious gifts.

MOVING FORWARD: Words can be cruel weapons, but they can also be a tool for encouragement and love. Offer a word of kindness to a parent, child, or sibling today.
