TUESDAY, January 5                  [Sarah, Theodora, and Syncletica of Egypt]

John 15:4 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.

The word abide is defined as “to accept or act in accordance with (a rule, decision, or recommendation).” Abiding with Jesus means more than merely accepting or agreeing to spend time with him—it means living into and out of the life, ministry, and teachings of Jesus.

When Jesus asks us to “abide in his love,” he is asking us to live into that love all day, every day. Sarah, Theodora, and Syncletica of Egypt were all Desert Mothers of the early Church. They receive few mentions and are often overshadowed by the Desert Fathers. However, spending time with them and studying their lives is to see tangible models of what it means to abide. They were all in.

MOVING FORWARD: What does being all in—abiding with Jesus—look like in your life?
