SATURDAY, October 5

Matthew 8:26 And [Jesus] said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a dead calm.

When my son was little, he was afraid of the dark—but he was even more afraid of rumbling and flashing thunderstorms. Ellis would come to my room or ask me to come into his during stormy nights.

I never got upset with Ellis for being afraid and seeking shelter with me. Jesus does not mind us going to him when we are afraid either. But I can also imagine how annoyed I would have been if Ellis screamed each time he was afraid instead of taking comfort in the fact that I would protect him.

How many times have we been faced with scary situations? And how many times has Jesus seen us through? Countless times I have asked Jesus to save me in the midst of life’s storms. And he has calmed the storm—or me—each and every time. Why are you afraid? I hear this question deep inside as I remember all the times Jesus has saved me.

MOVING FORWARD: What scares you? Share this fear with Jesus, and ask him to help you give it up.
