TUESDAY, March 5

Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.

The scholars ponder: The Divine
Indwells—or not? The bread and wine.
Of God’s “real presence,” I’ve no doubt;
my own, I’m not so sure about.

Paying attention is not easy. In conversation, even with those dear to me, I often realize I’ve totally stopped listening and am focused on an idea triggered by the other’s words or the view outside the window or what to say next.

Paying attention to God’s presence and teaching is sometimes an even greater challenge. Walking outdoors keeps me from drifting away, grounded to God’s good earth and seeing the world around me. Engaging my body and allowing my mind to just be present to God has become a way of staying still in my heart and allowing God to speak.

MOVING FORWARD: What helps you to pay attention, to hear and remember what God is saying to you?
