SUNDAY, April 5
Palm Sunday: The Sunday of the Passion

Matthew 26:43 When [Jesus] came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy.

A late frost has painted shattered glass upon an ice-covered field shining in the sunlight. Spring must have looked in the mirror and seen winter, I say to myself. I know that feeling.

There is an attic smell in the air—the flowers smell like mothballs. I can’t remember spring or Jesus’ footsteps on the sea. My betrayal is one of forgetting, falling asleep, dreaming of my own greatness.

I touch the frost glazing the green grass. The warm touch of my hand melts the ice. The silent, insistent singing of the sun touches and warms my memory. I wonder if there is still time to meet him in the garden.

MOVING FORWARD: It’s not too late to stay up with Jesus. Consider spending part of the night hours of Maundy Thursday in prayer, at your church or at home.
