MONDAY, April 5          Monday in Easter Week

Psalm 16:11 You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

At graveside burial services, the officiant says these words just before casting earth upon the coffin. So just after I finish saying, “in your right hand are pleasures for evermore,” the funeral director places dirt in my hand to cast onto the coffin. It always struck me as a poignant juxtaposition: eternal pleasures against the finality and messiness of dirt on a grave.

I have gotten into fights with funeral directors over the dirt. Sometimes they hide the dirt that’s left over from digging a grave. The “death care” industry has created something called “washed sand” that you can put into your hand for this purpose without actually getting dirty. They don’t want messiness.

We are just getting started on our fifty-day celebration of Easter. I can think of no better moment than this one to treasure the contrast between the messiness of our earthly lives and the heavenly glory of God’s eternal love for us, of Christ’s victory over death. We’re all a mess. And God loves us anyway.

MOVING FORWARD: Spend some time in the dirt today. Get your hands dirty planting and preparing for new growth.
