SATURDAY, June 5                           Boniface

2 Corinthians 9:6 The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

In one of the faith traditions of my younger years, I was taught to give so that I would get something back. On more than one occasion, I heard a speaker proclaim, “I give to get!” Their proof for this formula was Jesus himself, who gave himself to “get” (save) us. Altruism, generosity, or even love were not the true motivations for giving; rather, the motive appeared to be a kind of sanctified selfishness.

I do not doubt that God rewards us for the gifts of time, money, and work we give in service to others. It’s just that, it seems to me, our motivation for giving should be as selfless as we can make it. Sometimes lawyers do their work pro bono (Latin, “for the good”). My guess is that all Christian service should be pro bono. Any reward we might get now or in eternity should be eclipsed by the grateful eyes of our beneficiaries.

MOVING FORWARD: Offer a pro bono gift to a neighbor or community organization today.
