SUNDAY, July 5                           5 Pentecost

Matthew 11:29-30 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Almighty God, who after the creation of the world rested from all your works and sanctified a day of rest for all your creatures: Grant that we, putting away all earthly anxieties, may be duly prepared for the service of your sanctuary, and that our rest here upon earth may be a preparation for the eternal rest promised to your people in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (The Book of Common Prayer)

This collect for Saturdays from Morning Prayer reminds me that we are not just meant to be Jesus' hands and heart in the world: We are also meant to rest. Our rest supports and is a form of worship. In our rest we acknowledge whose we are—and the needs of our wonderfully made, God-given bodies and minds. When we let go of our desire to be in control and to push beyond the limits of our humanness, we praise God.

MOVING FORWARD: How will you find time for holy rest today or this week?
