MONDAY, January 6                                    Epiphany

Isaiah 60:1-2 Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you.

For a sailor navigating dangerous waters on a stormy night, no sight is more reassuring than a lighthouse. A steady lighthouse with a strong light both assures wayfarers of safety and shows the path to it.

Likewise, the light of Christ shows us the way home in the dangerous waters of this life. But Isaiah tells us that we are not meant to live solely as recipients or passive observers of the light.

We are meant to be the light of God’s love in the world. We are meant to live with the light of Christ shining through us. Just as the world of Isaiah waited for the light of the Messiah to arrive, so does the world wait today for each of us to shine that light into its darkest corners—to show a lost world the way home.

MOVING FORWARD: Epiphany is a season of light. Light a candle during your prayer time as part of your observance of the season.
