TUESDAY, November 6

Psalm 62:1 For God alone my soul in silence waits; from him comes my salvation.

We are offered two ways to use the psalms in our daily lives of prayer. The psalms are listed in the Daily Office lectionary (and in the daily readings printed at the top of each reflection in Forward Day by Day). If you are attentive to this, you can make it through most of the psalms in about two months’ time. Or you can use the Psalter itself, which is printed in the 1979 edition of The Book of Common Prayer and provides a guide for reading through the psalms once a month.

Either way, we are encouraged to read through and use the psalms more frequently than any other part of scripture. Could it be that every human experience is represented in them? The highs and the lows, the joys and sorrows, all of it is there—just waiting to speak to our hearts.

MOVING FORWARD: Some say the Book of Psalms is the Bible in miniature. Have you ever prayed through the Book of Psalms? Could you commit to doing it this month?
