FRIDAY, November 6                   William Temple

Luke 13:34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

Luke’s image of Jesus as a mother hen is the one I most cherish. As a mother, I feel viscerally the desire to draw the beloved bodies of my children into the safety of my arms—to hide under the shadow of my wings those warm precious bodies to whom my own body has given life.

I also know the heartbreak of the first time a child pulls away, whether as an act of independence or anger or a desire to assert that they aren’t babies anymore. No matter how much we love our children, we cannot protect them from life. And Jesus is there with us, loving arms outstretched, awaiting us all.

MOVING FORWARD: Read a favorite story from your childhood to one of your favorite small children.
