FRIDAY, March 6                           Ember Day

Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”

Alongside all the stories of Jesus’ healing encounters with the sick in body, mind, and spirit are all the questions of others who just don’t get it. These are people who want to draw back from this disturbance to their worldview, education, or their own place and power in an established community. But there is no turning back with a new way that is becoming present, now and not yet. The call of Jesus is to turn toward him those who are or have been turned away.

The call of Jesus comes through the miraculous and the ordinary, in moments and over lifetimes, through birth and death, with others or alone. Jesus’ call is always love in action.
