SATURDAY, July 6

Luke 23:42-43 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” [Jesus] replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

I am stunned by the faith of the “good” thief in this passage, the tenderness of his plea. In the darkest hour of his life comes this aching, dying wish. And I’m humbled by the poignancy of Jesus’ radical welcome, even as he faces his own death. I happened to be listening to a favorite song by the indie folk band Lord Huron while reading this story from Luke, and it seemed just right to me:

To the ends of the earth would you follow me?
There’s a world that was meant for our eyes to see
To the ends of the earth would you follow me?
If you won’t I must say my goodbyes to thee
