The Transfiguration

Exodus 34:29 Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God.

Human babies love faces. When babies see joy and delight in those who love them, they learn how to be joyful and delighted. The way my parents’ faces reflected their love for me when they gazed at my babyself taught me the life-truth that I am loved. The light in their eyes taught me one way to show love for others.

One interpretation of Moses’ shiny-face story is that he comes down the mountain with a holy sunburn. I like to imagine that Moses’ delight in being present to God is visible to others—literally written on his face.

Imagine the transfiguration in our own lives when we approach our worship of God with the same joy and delight of parents and newborns, gazing upon each other with wonder and love.

MOVING FORWARD: Who makes you light up when you see them? Call or write a note and tell them so today.
