FRIDAY, September 6

Psalm 31:3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my stronghold; for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.

When I was eleven, I was the target of a bully. I walked two miles out of my way to avoid going past his house on my way home from school. I withdrew from life and friends because I was afraid. Finally, with the support of adults who loved me, my bully problem was resolved, and I went on with life.

Our morning psalm reminds us that as followers of Jesus, we are meant to rely on God to be our fortress—to keep us secure everywhere we go. God has invited us into relationship so that the world might know God’s love through our actions. The promise of salvation is meant to embolden us to stand against the evil powers we encounter, to strengthen us to speak grace, mercy, and peace when darkness falls.

MOVING FORWARD: Consider volunteering at a local school. Befriend a child who might need an adult supporter.
