MONDAY, September 6                  [Hannah More]

Philippians 1:6 I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.

In order to have pumpkins before Halloween, our seeds need to be planted around July 4. Where I live, there is nothing romantic about planting anything in July. The sun is blazing, the air sticky, and the ground hard. Once the pumpkins are planted, there is only a short break before the baby vines appear. To prevent pests from destroying the young plants, I wrap duct-tape around my fingers, sticky side out, and go from plant to plant, bending low, back hurting, brow sweating, removing pest eggs from the leaves. After the initial danger passes, we water, and we wait. In early September, the pumpkins began to appear, and we wait some more for the good work that we started in July to come to its fullest fruition.

Once we pop a pumpkin off the vine, it will stop growing no matter how young or old it is. The stem will wither, and the nutrients will stop flowing. So we wait longer than I would like so that all the goodness flows out of those vines and into the fruit, and I remember that I too need to stay connected to the vine of all life and of love overflowing.

MOVING FORWARD: How are you staying connected to the vine?
