TUESDAY, January 7

John 6:51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.

When my daughters were babies, it seemed their sole concern was getting from one meal to the next—sometimes from one spoonful to the next. Many of us live our whole lives like babies, drifting between attempts to satiate ourselves. We don’t always look to good sources of nourishment either.

Too often, like the crowds that follow Jesus after he feeds the multitudes, we want a sign we’ll be fed with more of the stuff of this world. We want to see the manna and the fish and water turned into wine. But Jesus asks us to look more deeply at how he nourishes us—his bread is not the bread of the world.

We are called to look beyond this world, to feed on the real presence of Christ, on the Word made flesh. When we eat here, we are born into a life that knows no hunger, thirst, or death.

MOVING FORWARD: Bring extra fruit or a sandwich with you today to share with a hungry person.
