THURSDAY, January 7

John 2:11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Our guide in Cana told us this joke: “The wine is so bad in Cana that if Jesus were here today, he would turn the wine back into water.” I am not prepared to debate the truth of that statement, but Cana, Nazareth, Jerusalem, Jericho, and Hebron are all still cities—thriving, struggling, living just as they did when this story occurred.

Indeed, the relatives of the wedding couple in this story still live in Cana. In this ordinary place with everyday people at a daily event, Jesus performed his first miracle. This miracle did not move heaven and earth or cure anyone. Jesus’ work of turning water into wine simply provided something for those beautiful and beloved ordinary people to enjoy. We should all take great comfort in that.

MOVING FORWARD: Find a way to share a special celebratory meal or beverage with a friend you might have missed during Christmastide.
