SATURDAY, November 7                           Willibrord

Luke 14:3-4 And Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, “Is it lawful to cure people on the sabbath, or not?” But they were silent. So Jesus took him and healed him, and sent him away.

We love rules. There is great safety in rules. The lawyers and the Pharisees in this gospel passage were not evil or sadistic people; they were faithful followers of the rules—just like you and me.

Rules make our world orderly and safe: Think of traffic at a four-way stop! But rules can also give us a hiding place when difficult decisions must be made.

In our legalistic society, it is tempting to follow the letter of the law and ignore the spirit. Obeying the Holy Spirit can require risk to ourselves, our livelihoods, our families, or even just our convenience. We fall into danger when we start to interpret the rules to our own benefit and lose sight of Jesus in the faces of those beside us.

MOVING FORWARD: Are you a rule breaker or a rule follower? How has this helped you in your life of faith?
