WEDNESDAY, April 7 Wednesday in Easter Week

Luke 24:13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.

The disciples are not expecting to meet Jesus on the road to Emmaus. It is Easter Day, and Jesus has been raised from the dead only a few hours earlier, and those weary disciples are trying to make sense of reports that seem, literally, unbelievable. And yet, there in the midst of their turmoil, sorrow, doubt, and bewilderment, they meet Jesus.

A few years ago, I had the great gift of spending Holy Week in Jerusalem. That year, several terrorist incidents were directed at Christians, and security was at unprecedentedly high levels. We were not able to participate in several of the local rituals as I had hoped for in the months leading up to the trip. Easter Sunday, in particular, was not what I had been longing for. But that evening, I made my way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and I suddenly realized that I had been meeting Jesus all week, even if it was not as I had expected. As he did with those disciples on the road, Jesus sought me.
