FRIDAY, June 7

Luke 10:41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things.”

When given the choice between an encounter with the living, breathing, and loving Word of God and anything else, there really is no choice. Jesus reminds Martha—and all of us reading this story—that she doesn’t have to worry or be distracted by anything else while he is with her, Mary, and Lazarus. He has come to see her—not to judge how clean her house is or how well organized her kitchen might be.

Martha keeps herself busy with things that keep her from enjoying Jesus’ presence. She’s a lot like me, and maybe she’s a lot like you. How often do we say to ourselves, “Let me just get this one thing done…” That one little thing can keep us from sitting at Jesus’ feet with our whole hearts, minds, and souls, open to the gift he offers us of himself.

MOVING FORWARD: What’s one little thing you can put down this week?
