SUNDAY, July 7                           4 Pentecost

Luke 10:3 Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.

Once upon a time, I was an admissions counselor for my college alma mater. I knew my school was a special place, but I sometimes struggled with trying to convince others to participate in a community so dear to my heart. The possibility of rejection was scary.

This is surely just a fraction of how the disciples feel as Jesus appoints and sends them out on their way. If I were one of the seventy, I would be swallowing a lump in my throat, walking along barefoot, wondering about my next meal, and hoping people would be nice to me.

Offering peace and knowing it might not be returned is a powerful, radical act. But that is the charge Jesus issues. Whether the peace we proclaim is received or not does not negate its presence. The perseverance of peace dissolves the false choice of rejection versus acceptance and names a state of radical abundance where everyone belongs.

MOVING FORWARD: How will you proclaim peace in your life and relationships?
