WEDNESDAY, August 7

Mark 9:1 And [Jesus] said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.”

It feels a little out of character for Jesus to sound so darkly apocalyptic, so cryptic. “Some of you,” he says pointedly, “will still be alive when the kingdom of God has come.” And Christians have argued ever since: What? Which of us?When?

As soon as the risen Jesus has ascended, Christians start watching for him to come back. Keeping a certain sense of energized expectation is good, don’t get me wrong. What isn’t good is the human tendency to exclude others. When Jesus comes back, we say, we will be in and y’all will be out.

Jesus himself is always widening paths, not narrowing them. He invites everyone into his circle. He is always gathering children as well as random others to himself, welcoming the stranger, loving the unlovely, and healing the unacceptable. And then he leaves us here to be the body of Christ. May we be so.

MOVING FORWARD: How will you chose to be part of Jesus’ body today?
