TUESDAY, January 8

John 4:49-50 The official said to [Jesus], “Sir, come down before my little boy dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started on his way.

The light of Epiphany shines brightly from this story in John. But there is much to ponder. The story ends with a final statement about the official: “So he and all his household believed.” What do these people believe? There’s no Nicene Creed to fall back on, so what do the people Jesus is ministering to and around think about him?

The crowd in Cana clamors for more miracles. This royal official, desperate for his dying son to live, pushes through to talk to Jesus. The official was likely not invited to the wedding where Jesus turned water into wine. Yet, this friend of Herod has interpreted the stories he has heard to mean that Jesus can do more than fancy party tricks.

The official believes Jesus commands supreme power, and he literally begs Jesus to heal his son. When Jesus sees this kind of faith, power is unleashed, and life and love win.

MOVING FORWARD: What do you believe about Jesus?
