FRIDAY, January 8                  Harriet Bedell

Isaiah 59:19 So those in the west shall fear the name of the LORD, and those in the east, his glory; for he will come like a pent-up stream that the wind of the LORD drives on.

Harriet Bedell was an Episcopal deaconess, first working with the Cheyenne people in Oklahoma. Later, she continued her work with indigenous people in Alaska, where she started a school in the small village of Tanana, a town I was blessed to visit several years ago. At the time, I had no idea Harriet Bedell had anything to do with the school.

Some years before visiting Alaska, I was in Marco Island, Florida. I learned of Bedell’s work there among the Seminole and Mikasuki people and the great reverence she held for the Everglades. The Mikasuki tribe of Florida gave Bedell the name Inkoshopie (woman who prays). Harriet Bedell lived to be ninety-four and never stopped working for Jesus—she never stopped riding “that pent-up stream that the wind of the Lord drives on.” May we do the same.

MOVING FORWARD: Spend some significant time reading along with Isaiah today.
