SATURDAY, December 8

Isaiah 4:5 Then the Lord will create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over its places of assembly a cloud by day and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night. Indeed over all the glory there will be a canopy.

Approaching a campsite at dusk after a long hike in, seeing familiar faces or holy trees, sacred springs or a flock of wild turkeys, feels more like coming home than walking into my house. Songs shared around a campfire between friends, whether singing like angels or howling at the moon, are my favorite concerts.

And nothing compares to settling into the tent for the night. Cocooned in a sleeping bag, I talk to my beloved about the day that has passed, comparing notes and wonders, watching the stars wheel over our heads through the rainfly. We wake to morning dew and the smell of wood smoke in our hair.

Isaiah says the day of the Lord—that greatest, best, unending day that is coming—will be kind of like a camping trip. That sounds like heaven to me.

MOVING FORWARD: Even if it’s cold outside, take a short walk under the starlight, saying some prayers and soaking in the wonder of God’s canopy.
