John 7:24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.
Our gospel reading shows how people misunderstood Jesus and constantly argued with him. Repeatedly they accuse him of blasphemy and being possessed by the devil.
Take a minute to reflect on the most hurtful thing you have said to or about someone. What is the most hurtful thing said to you by a friend, a spouse, children, colleagues, or church members?
Jesus lives and ministers in the midst of harsh criticisms. However, he never retaliates by shaming and blaming others. Through it all, Jesus learns to trust more deeply in God. This model, though hard to follow, is one that we should all seek to embrace—to not shame, blame, or judge others but to treat everyone with dignity, respect, and—most of all—love.
