Psalm 40:13-14 For innumerable troubles have crowded upon me…they are more in number than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me. Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; O Lord, make haste to help me.
How could the psalms know just how I’m feeling? How do they give voice to the tightness in my chest, the floundering of my heart?
Other books come and go in the daily schedule of readings, but the psalms are a faithful companion. They have a way of knowing when we need to cry out in anger or joy, in frustration or gratitude, for relief or strength. And in times when the wall seems too high of a hurdle, the psalms provide the prayer most needed: O Lord, deliver me. O Lord, make haste to help me.
MOVING FORWARD: Give yourself permission to pray: God, I am overwhelmed. I need your help. Amen.
