FRIDAY, June 8

Matthew 14:27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Fear is the preoccupation with the question, “What if?” What if I don’t do well on the exam? What if I don’t get the job? What if the diagnosis is grim? Truth be told, none of us can live out our days without at least a passing glint of fear. More than a hundred verses in the Bible explicitly tell us to not be afraid. And we still struggle with fear and anxiety.

Having faith in God in Christ is not about militantly stamping out all fear or pretending that reality is something other than what it is. Rather, following Jesus is about having boundless, bottomless hope. Christian hope insists that even after having considered all the naked facts, we believe we are beloved and chosen by God. This hope allows us to hear Jesus saying: “Take heart!”

Take heart, brothers and sisters, because little by little, God is chipping away at the walls we’ve constructed out of fears and doubts and preoccupations. Although we may not see the full picture now, God is at work, drawing us out of our brokenness and into a life of promise.

MOVING FORWARD: Think about one fear or anxiety that you can work toward committing and turning over to Jesus.
