TUESDAY, June 8         [Melania the Elder]

Deuteronomy 30:15-18a See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish.

Today’s passage can come off as harsh, apparently revealing a jealous God too ready to punish anyone who will not follow. It helps me to remember that God’s wisdom exceeds ours. God knows what happens when people make bad choices: they suffer. I must remember, too, that a warning is not the same as a wish. What this passage seems to express is a cause/effect reality. God warns us but does not wish us any harm. I could say to someone, “You could die if you text and drive!” but that’s certainly not a wish. It’s just the opposite.

God wants the best for us. What is best for us? A life that strives to follow God’s ways.

MOVING FORWARD: Is someone in your life making bad decisions? Pray for wisdom on how to approach the person with love.
