THURSDAY, July 8                  [Priscilla and Aquila]

Luke 24:41 While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, [Jesus] said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?”

In the movie Meet Joe Black, Brad Pitt portrays Death, who has come to earth in the form of a human to escort a prominent man to the next life. In becoming human, Death discovers the joy of peanut butter. He loves it so much that, in one of his last requests before leaving earth, he asks for a jar to take with him.

When Jesus is raised from the dead in a resurrected body, the apostles are understandably overwhelmed with emotion: joy, disbelief, fear, excitement—and in the middle of their exasperation, Jesus interrupts them with a request for food.

This seems so...human. I imagine the disciples feeling grounded in this moment. Eating with Jesus was familiar and comforting, and it confirmed his physical presence with them before he left earth, not with Death, but as its Conqueror.

MOVING FORWARD: Think back over your favorite stories of Jesus. What details highlight his humanity? Which ones underscore his divinity? How does being both fully human and fully divine shape your understanding of Jesus?
