THURSDAY, January 9                           Julia Chester Emory

Romans 8:14-15a For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption.

From The Archives: Thursday, January 9, 1936

People who live together learn to love each other. What a wonderful fact it is that just living in a family causes love to be born! Mutual service begets love, and in turn love makes service a joy. We love others because they love us. Love has the right of way in a family—no one disputes it. Love glorifies burdens. Thus mother love is most perfect, mirroring the love of God, because it flowers even in sacrifice and pain.

In loving our own families we learn to love other families. And this is the basis of friendship. We say of our friend, “He is like a brother to me.” Nearness reveals dearness. If only we could get close to those who we now fear, how the world’s suspicions and hates would vanish—especially through Christian love, which can surmount any barrier. Love has intuitions that precede knowledge. Perfect love casts out fear. Will you seek to send your family’s love out into the wider world?
