SUNDAY, February 9                  5 Epiphany

1 Corinthians 2:2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

Bob Marley, activist and Jamaican singer/songwriter, frequently sang about all the troubles in the world. In songs such as “Them Belly Full (But We Hungry),” “Iron Lion Zion,” and “Redemption Song,” Marley’s understanding of compassion, grace, mercy, and restoration are on full display. His music, whether with The Wailers or as a solo act, was a response to the suffering he saw in the world.

One of the ways Christians respond to suffering in the world is to think of the crucified Christ. When we think of the crucified Christ, we think of the crucified people throughout the world. The Holy Spirit calls compassion out of us, and we respond with our whole hearts. The suffering of Christ is a powerful reminder to people of faith that our brothers and sisters are being persecuted, that abject poverty and suffering are scandals we have been called and empowered to root out. To know and comfort the crucified Christ is an invitation to remember that we are each other’s keepers.

MOVING FORWARD: Spend some time today reading 1 Corinthians 2:1-16.
