MONDAY, March 9                           Gregory of Nyssa

1 Corinthians 4:20-21 For the kingdom of God depends not on talk but on power. What would you prefer? Am I to come to you with a stick, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?

Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians is a letter of exhortation and pastoral counsel written in his apostolic authority and drawing attention to his example and conventional wisdom. He uses every way he can to talk to the proud Corinthians—reprimand, irony, even praise—passionately urging them to consider what it means to be called by God.

Maybe, just maybe, by verse 21 in our reading today, Paul remembers that it isn’t possible to change others, only ourselves—and the way God brings transformation is through the life, love, and ministry of Jesus, showing us how to love in the power of the Holy Spirit. Gentleness and love in action are the means by which God in Christ shows us the new way.

MOVING FORWARD: Is your default tool a stick or a spirit of gentleness? Is it time to consider a new way to communicate?
