FRIDAY, August 9

2 Samuel 12:1 And the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor.”

Today we hear the prophetic version of Just wait until your Father gets home. Nathan is so angry he is practically sputtering and tells the king a tale of injustice concerning two men and an ewe lamb. David declares the act of injustice to be punishable by death. Then, Nathan springs the trap: David has sinned not only against Uriah and Bathsheba, but he has despised God.

None of us would ever set out to despise God. What a horrifying thought. We love God. We want what God wants. Not me, Lord. Surely you can’t mean me? We would—probably—never do the things David has done. And yet, his brand of self-deception sneaks up on us. How easily we assume we are entitled to that which we desire. How subtly small-scale sins and omissions grow, infesting our hearts and minds like mold.

MOVING FORWARD: What are you doing to help keep your heart and mind “mold free?”
