MONDAY, September 9

Psalm 41:8 “A deadly thing,” they say, “has fastened on him; he has taken to his bed and will never get up again.”

At a certain point in my life, I came to realize that being wholly responsible for myself was not working out. I was broken, and the weight of my brokenness was overwhelming. Though my physical health was sound, I was in need of healing.

I suspect that many of you have been caught in this grip of a kind of death that feels unshakable. Poet John Donne reminds us that no one is an island; rather, we exist within a web of relationship and obligation, a community of choice and context.

Jesus reminds us that death cannot contain the love God offers us with the incarnation. And we are offered the opportunity to share in eternal life in our own flesh. Thanks be to God.

MOVING FORWARD: Read John Donne’s poem, “No Man Is an Island.”
