THURSDAY, September 9                   The Martyrs of Memphis

Philippians 2:13 For it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

In 1878, a pandemic of yellow fever took over the city of Memphis, Tennessee, for the third time in ten years. After a quarantine order was issued, half the population fled. Ninety percent of those who stayed became infected, and five thousand died. Sisters Constance, Thecla, Ruth, and Frances, and priests Charles Parsons and Louis Schuyler were among the few who stayed to tend to the sick.

I have stood in the Sisters Chapel at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Memphis and wondered at their courage and faith. How did they have the strength to honor their vocational call to the point of death, to risk all they had to offer love and care for the suffering up until their final moments? I wonder if they knew their actions would go down in history as holy, or if they were simply just doing the next right thing, putting one faithful foot in front of the other, harnessing the energy of God deep within. I suppose we all have that option, during pandemics and ordinary times, to choose to remember the energy of God within us, to do the next right thing faithfully, one decision at a time.

MOVING FORWARD: Thank the heroes in your life.
