MONDAY, April 22        Monday in Easter Week

Matthew 28:9-10 Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Matthew includes the discipleship of Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph throughout his Passion narrative. He highlights their presence at the crucifixion and the tomb as well as being the first witnesses to the resurrection.

Regardless of the danger the women encounter, Matthew realizes that both women believe and trust in Christ, never abandoning him as Peter and the others do. Jesus does not limit the roles women play in his ministry or in the world but rather exemplifies their worth in the kingdom building process. The stories we have of the faithfulness of Mary Magdalene and the other Mary demonstrate how their brothers in ministry honor their dignity and love for Jesus. These women are beacons of the gospel to us all.

MOVING FORWARD: What stories of faithfulness in your life remind you of Mary Magdalene and the other Mary? Share them today.
